I'm not at all familiar with your hardware but apparently it requires some tricky handling. This means that the program could not do its job and is asking for guidance from you, which of course is almost impossible when you encounter it as you did! The giveaway is that 'grub>' prompt you got.
Simply pointing that out would have been a huge help, as I thought it was the installer.You're correct that it's a debug menu, part of 'grub' which is the ' GRand Unified Bootloader' program that does for many Linux distributions what the 'iosys.sys' program did for older versions of Windows - controls loading of the actual system into RAM, starting from power up when absolutely nothing is in memory. I think the DOS-like menu I kept seeing was some kind of debug menu - surely someone here knows what it is (I described it in my initial post).
